Question:

3. Issues with video / audio

(Last edited: Wednesday, 26 July 2023, 1:54 PM)
Answer:

BBB requires access to the network or Internet on your device that is as unhindered as possible. If this is not the case due to local network peculiarities or firewalls, it may be that a BBB meeting room can be entered, but video or sound connections are not established correctly in it. BBB often displays error messages with error codes in these cases. In most cases, the local search for and elimination of causes is complex and unfortunately cannot be comprehensively provided by the support team.

Question:

4. BBB can't access my microphone / camera. Why is this and what can I do?

Answer:

There may be the following stumbling blocks and starting points for solving the problem:

  • Do you use the browsers we already recommend Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave or Safari? If not, first try to see if the problems with these browsers are also present. Refresh your browser and, if necessary, clear the cache before reloading the page.
  • Can BBB or other software (Skype, WebEx, MS Teams, etc.) find your devices? If not, check if the necessary drivers are installed. In some cases, problems with a driver update could also be fixed.
  • Is it possible that other software (Skype, WebEx, MS Teams, etc.) or another meeting in another browser/browser tab has exclusive access to the devices? If so, please close all other digital meetings.
  • Has the browser not been allowed to access the microphone and camera? You can check this in Chrome and Firefox via the lock icon to the left directly next to the address bar (URL) and, if consent has not been given, change it there (example: Edge).

  • Have the right sound and image sources been selected? As soon as you connect an external headset, you have at least two sources for audio output and at least one for microphone. Here, care must be taken to select the right source in each case. If you are unsure what you have selected in BBB: In the echo test, you can click on the red icon with your thumb down. After that, a dialog will appear in which you can reselect the sources.

  • Do you use a notebook or an external headset? Some headsets and notebooks have their own mute switch, which can be used to mute the microphone on the hardware side. Please check accordingly.

Question:

5. What equiptment do I need?

Answer:

In addition to your device with an up-to-date chrome-based browser, please use a headset in any case to ensure good audio quality (input and output). This contributes significantly to efficiency and the ability to concentrate (keyword zoom fatigue). Microphones integrated into laptops are usually not sufficient. Remember that sound is inherently more important than image. Be sure to mute yourself if there are multiple participants to avoid feedback (echo) and background noise.

The following tips can help you find a suitable headset:

  • Wired (USB or AUX port), because there may be connection problems via Bluetooth. USB headsets bypass the PC's sound card, so there can be fewer complications. AUX headsets can also be connected to a mobile phone.
  • Noise reduction/noise cancelling of the microphone
  • Frequency 125-15,000 Hz
  • Weight: lightweight headset for long and comfortable wearing
These tips are also very helpful for a successful video conference.

Question:

6. Why can't I see all participants?

(Last edited: Wednesday, 26 July 2023, 2:16 PM)
Answer:

During the courses, participants can see a maximum of 6 other people. Moderators see all participants at the same time. In any case, the person who is speaking will be displayed.

Tip for facilitators: During group work phases, when it is important that all participants can see each other, you can assign them a moderator status. This setting can be reset quickly and easily after group work (left-click on the participant).
