By 2050, 70% of the world's population is expected to live in urban communities. Cities continue to grow, but this often causes air pollution, housing shortages and an insufficient infrastructure. Municipalities come together to learn from each other and promote measures to encourage the local people to take action. Here, at Campus Kottenforst we have set up a so-called Green Island in cooperation with the student initiative AG Grüne Infrastruktur and the Wissenschaftsladen Bonn (WILA).
This is what it is all about:
1. In a growing city, we need places to meet
The more people in Bonn move close together, the less they know each other. The islands are built, planted, and maintained jointly by volunteers in their neighbourhoods. Here, the islands are maintained by an inititive of colleagues.
2. In summer, we need green spaces instead of gray concrete
Climate change is also happening right on our doorstep. The Green Islands draw attention to the fact that nature makes the city more resilient against heat, torrential rain, and storms.
3. Insects need native plants to survive
There are fewer and fewer insects. Food and habitat for them should also be provided in the city. The Green Islands are planted with native herbs and perennials and can provide good examples for your own balcony or garden. If you are interested in the project, please take a closer look at WILA's project on green islands.
